Joachim Nagel, president of Germany’s Bundesbank, is actively campaigning to become the next head of the European Central Bank. Christine Lagarde’s term runs until October 2027 but reports suggest she could step down early. Nagel, who has called Bitcoin a digital tulip and strongly supports the digital euro, attended key German cabinet meetings in Berlin in July 2026 as part of his positioning. Other contenders include former Dutch central bank head Klaas Knot and former Bank of Spain governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos. Surveys by think tank OMFIF consistently placed Nagel among the top two or three candidates in early to mid-2026.
