Brazil’s $319B crypto market faces October licensing deadline as central bank tightens grip

Brazil’s central bank has set October 30, 2026 as the deadline for all virtual asset service providers to obtain an official license. Unlicensed firms will be disconnected from the country’s entire banking infrastructure, losing all access to financial services. The regulatory framework requires segregation of client assets, independent audits, cybersecurity protocols, and minimum capital reserves of approximately 37.2 million reais for custodians. With 26 million crypto users and approximately $319 billion in digital asset flows in 2025, Brazil holds Latin America’s largest digital asset market. Since approximately 90% of the country’s digital asset transactions involve stablecoins, these have been incorporated into the foreign exchange regulatory framework, subject to transaction limits and reporting requirements.
