BitMEX shuts down after 11 years as regulatory pressure and competition take their toll

BitMEX, the pioneering crypto derivatives exchange, will permanently cease operations on September 23, 2026, ending 11 years of trading history. Founded by HDR Global Trading Limited, it introduced 100x-leverage perpetual swaps and processed over $3 trillion in cumulative trading volume. The exchange faced regulatory action in 2020 when the CFTC imposed sanctions for operating as an unregistered derivatives exchange and failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering controls. Users must close positions by August 26, 2026, and withdraw all funds before the final shutdown deadline.
