Bitkey, the Bitcoin hardware wallet built by Jack Dorsey’s Block, has unveiled the Emergency Exit Kit, a feature allowing users to transfer funds without relying on the company’s servers or app. The tool uses a 2-of-3 multisig architecture where the user controls two keys (App Key and Hardware Key) while Block holds the third. By combining the physical Hardware Key with a PDF containing an encrypted version of the App Key stored in iCloud or Google Drive, users can sign transactions independently, cutting Block out of the loop. This approach aims to ensure funds remain accessible even if Block were to disappear. The required open-source utility can be sideloaded onto an NFC-compatible Android device, and the Bitkey hardware wallet is priced at $150.
