Bitcoin: Review of the First Transaction Designed to Resist a Quantum Computer

A StarkWare researcher conducted a quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction by transferring 3.1 BTC on the mainnet. The Quantum Safe Bitcoin scheme, published as open source by Avihu Levy, abandons elliptic curves in favor of hash functions, providing an estimated resistance of 118 bits against a quantum attack. Each transaction of this type costs between 75 and 150 dollars in GPU computation, significantly higher than a classic Bitcoin transfer. Approximately 6.9 million BTC could be vulnerable in the future, a risk that has led BlackRock, Strategy and Coinbase to invest 15 million dollars in research on the subject.
