A study published in the journal Energy Economics shows that Bitcoin mining could absorb 83% of the wind energy wasted annually in Ireland, generating a 32% increase in wind farm revenues without relying on public subsidies. The country currently wastes 11.4% of its available wind energy, a figure that the Climate Action Plan aims to reduce below 7% by 2030. Compared to batteries or hydrogen electrolysis, Bitcoin mining has the advantage of requiring no subsidies, no grid upgrades, and no degradation, making it a fiscally neutral solution for taxpayers. This research, conducted on an island and regulated electrical grid, also applies to other European markets such as the United Kingdom, which suffers from the same wind energy losses.
