Bitcoin Fear Reaches Record High as Coldcard Exploit Shakes Confidence in Self-Custody

Bitcoin fear has reached its highest level ever recorded on crypto social media, according to data from Santiment Intelligence. The Coldcard incident, which allowed the theft of nearly 1,100 BTC (over $70 million) via malicious firmware distributed to users, generated unprecedented levels of negative comments, surpassing even the FTX collapse, Mt. Gox, and the COVID-19 crash. Approximately 1,200 wallets were compromised during a coordinated 41-minute operation, with identical transaction fees suggesting an automated attack. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao commented on the incident, noting that even old wallets can contain bugs, highlighting the inherent risks of self-custody.
