The BIP-110 soft fork split from Bitcoin’s main chain after block 961,632 this week, after mining pool Roughnecks managed to mine only two blocks (961,632 and 961,633) on its branch. The main chain reached block 961,651, building an 18-block lead within about a day, then exceeding 80 blocks according to Michael Saylor, while roughly 99.85% of Bitcoin’s hashrate stayed on the main chain. Mining difficulty stood at 127.48T, a level inherited by both chains but poorly suited to a minority chain that mined far slower. The underlying conflict centered on the OP_RETURN data limit and block space reserved for payments, after Bitcoin Core dropped its old restrictions allowing Ordinals and Runes to fill blocks. Developer Murch subsequently removed Luke Dashjr from his role as BIP editor, citing a conflict of interest in his handling of the proposal.
