Binance provided Russian authorities with data on cryptocurrency donations made by a Russian IT specialist, leading to his arrest on terrorism financing charges. The man, arrested in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, allegedly raised approximately $6,500 in cryptocurrency through social media between October 2022 and October 2023 while living in Turkey, before forwarding the funds to armed groups for weapons and equipment. Binance signed a data-sharing agreement with Rosfinmonitoring, Russia’s financial intelligence unit, in 2021. This case illustrates how data held by a centralized platform can be used to de-anonymize cryptocurrency users and build a cross-border criminal case.
