U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that no sanctions relief or new economic agreements with Moscow would be possible as long as the war in Ukraine continues. The two officials met on the sidelines of a G20 finance leaders’ summit in Asheville, North Carolina. European leaders strongly objected to the Russian minister’s presence at the summit, boycotting the traditional group photo with Anton Siluanov. Europe also plans to expand its sanctions to put additional pressure on Moscow’s economy and finances.
