Atletico Madrid signed Canadian striker Jonathan David on a season-long loan from Juventus with a non-obligatory purchase option set at €25 million. The deal was finalized on September 1, 2026, making David the first Canadian player in the club’s history. The Spanish side needed reinforcements up front due to Alexander Sorloth’s injury and questions surrounding Julián Álvarez’s availability. Juventus is covering a significant portion of David’s wages, estimated at around €11 million gross per year. During his time at Lille between 2020 and 2025, David scored 109 goals and provided 31 assists in 232 appearances, cementing his status as Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer with 42 goals for the national team.
