Apple has filed a legal complaint against the UK government challenging a Technical Capability Notice issued in January 2025, which ordered the company to provide access to encrypted iCloud backups. In response, Apple disabled its Advanced Data Protection feature for all UK users. The original worldwide scope of the demand was reduced to UK-only data following US objections in August 2025. The case is expected to be heard by a tribunal in early 2026 under the Investigatory Powers Act, commonly known as the Snoopers’ Charter.
