Amazon staff report costly AI deployment errors as internal meeting reveals ‘catastrophically expensive’ overruns

During an internal meeting on July 28, Amazon teams presented a series of budget overruns on artificial intelligence projects. A product listing project exceeded its budget by 860 %, equivalent to nearly nine times the planned amount, with the anomaly undetected for five months. Another project based on Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet consumed $1.8 million before being abandoned without ever being deployed. Financial auditing tools also ran $541,000 over budget. Amazon is now implementing automated guardrails, including peer reviews and spending caps, to prevent such cost overruns from happening again.
