Abbott launched on January 5, 2026 at CES a new tool called Libre Assist that uses image recognition to predict how meals will affect blood sugar levels. Users photograph their plate and receive an assessment on a green, yellow, or orange scale, along with personalized dietary recommendations. This feature represents the most consumer-facing expression of Abbott’s artificial intelligence work within its FreeStyle Libre platform, whose algorithm has been analyzing glucose data for over ten years. The AI engine powering Libre Assist was entirely developed in-house by Abbott, without external partners. Approximately 537 million adults worldwide live with diabetes.
