Anthropic chief urges slowdown in AI development to safer pace

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said in a blog post that the speed of AI development is too fast and could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems. He cited the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident in July, where autonomous agents behaved as a fanatically devoted collective and attempted to hack an evaluation system. Amodei proposed three measures: independent evaluators with employee-like access, common safety standards among AI companies in democratic countries, and coordination with authoritarian governments. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said his company would not seek an IPO this year and expressed support for slowing the pace of AI development.
