South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kim Jung-kwan, has confirmed a 200 billion dollar strategic investment commitment to the United States, capped at 20 billion dollars per year. This amount is part of a 350 billion dollar total package negotiated under the Trump administration in 2025, with 150 billion dollars allocated to shipbuilding cooperation. Investments will target energy, artificial intelligence, and nuclear projects, including the Encinal combined-cycle gas power plant in Texas designed to power AI data centers. To protect its domestic economy, South Korea has implemented a milestone-based disbursement mechanism, and the National Assembly passed the Special Law on Strategic Investment in March 2026 with bipartisan support.
