We Should Have Banned Cryptocurrencies, » Opera Co-Founder Says

Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Vivaldi and co-founder of Opera, says cryptocurrencies should have been banned as they exert excessive political influence. In January 2022, he already condemned crypto, calling it « a pyramid scheme posing as currency » and criticizing Bitcoin’s energy consumption and lack of real-world applications. He also advocates for banning user profiling for ads and content algorithms, and questions AI companies that call for regulation while being unable to self-regulate. Vivaldi, with over 4.2 million active users, notably refused to add crypto features, in contrast to Opera’s aggressive Web3 push.
