Canada seeks $1T from investors amid Trump tensions

Prime Minister Mark Carney is pitching 167 projects to global investors at the Toronto summit in September 2026, aiming to attract $1 trillion over five years. Between 2015 and 2024, Canada lost a net $1 trillion in capital flows, with outflows outpacing inflows. Foreign direct investment reached $96.8 billion in 2025, and first-half 2026 inflows stood at $44.7 billion. US-Canada trade talks collapsed in August 2026, prompting Ottawa to propose retaliatory tariffs. Approximately $500 billion is expected from new private-sector capital, with the remainder requiring redirection of domestic savings and pension fund allocations.
