U.S. reveals import ban on slew of Canadian goods as trade war escalates

The White House announced a ban on imports of large-capacity motorcycles, whey products, molasses, non-alcoholic beer, and alcoholic beverages including wines, spirits and whiskies from Canada, effective September 29, 2026. These restrictions largely replace the 50% tariffs previously imposed. In response, Ottawa imposed tariffs on 27.6 billion Canadian dollars worth of U.S. goods the same day, targeting over 700 products in steel, dairy, farm equipment, pulp, paper and electronics. Total trade in goods between the two countries amounts to 715.5 billion dollars, and economists have warned of the risks of further escalation for growth.
