OpenAI announced it solved the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems worth $1 million from the Clay Mathematics Institute. The proof was produced by approximately 10,000 coordinating AI agents over 88 hours and verified using the Lean software. NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster claims he and Anthropic’s Levent Alpöge solved the problem first, accusing OpenAI’s Sébastien Bubeck of learning about their unpublished work and attempting to claim credit for it. Bubeck, OpenAI, and CEO Sam Altman deny the allegations and shared messages they say prove their good faith. Buckmaster and Alpöge’s work was praised by Fields Medalist Terence Tao, but their most advanced result remains unpublished pending a final Lean verification.
