HIVE Digital Technologies, through its BUZZ HPC subsidiary, has signed Canada’s Responsible Data Centre Development Principles, a voluntary framework launched by the Canadian government on September 3, 2026, alongside 22 other companies including Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI. The framework establishes five core expectations: sustainable benefits for local communities, no electricity cost shifts to consumers, minimized water and ecological footprint, transparency on local effects, and strategically beneficial outcomes for Canada. HIVE plans to build a 320 MW AI-focused data center in the Greater Toronto Area, with a price tag of CA$3.5 billion, expected to be operational in the second half of 2027 and housing over 100,000 GPUs using zero-water closed-loop cooling systems. If delivered on schedule with its promised specifications, this project would establish HIVE as a major player in North American AI compute infrastructure, though the voluntary nature of the principles raises questions about their practical enforceability.
