The G7 published a report on September 3, 2026 calling on governments and businesses to migrate immediately to post-quantum cryptography, citing the « harvest now, decrypt later » threat. The European Union set the end of 2026 as the starting point for this migration and 2030 for the most sensitive systems, while the US NIST is planning a full ban after 2035. Bitcoin is particularly exposed, especially the old P2PK-format addresses from 2009 whose public keys have been visible on the blockchain since their creation. Bitcoin developers are working on BIP-360 for new addresses (P2MR), Ethereum is targeting 2029 for its post-quantum infrastructure, and Solana is also testing fixes. The undertaking is colossal and requires a soft fork involving the entire ecosystem.
