China explores humanoid robots for potential combat use

China’s People’s Liberation Army is actively integrating humanoid robots into urban combat scenarios alongside human soldiers. In May 2025, it issued a formal tender for humanoid robots for training purposes, while researchers at the National University of Defense Technology published a study in August 2025 on integrating these systems into urban assault operations alongside human soldiers. China dominates the global market with approximately 95% of worldwide humanoid robot shipments in 2025, giving it a significant industrial advantage for defense projects. norinco, China’s state-owned defense group, unveiled the Fuxi humanoid robot in August 2026, designed for reconnaissance and remote operations. However, no armed humanoid robots are currently deployed in operational Chinese units, with energy consumption and reliability constraints in dynamic environments remaining major obstacles.
