Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would ban AI systems matching or exceeding human cognitive performance, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison. Both camps now accept the need for some form of oversight, but the fundamental disagreement centers on whether development should be halted while rules are written.
