The Vatican is investing approximately 100 million euros ($117 million) in an agrivoltaic plant to become the world’s first carbon-neutral state. The facility, with a capacity of 80 to 90 megawatts, will be constructed on the Vatican-owned Santa Maria di Galeria estate outside Rome, covering approximately 1,050 to 1,100 acres. Initiated by Pope Francis in 2024, the project is being developed in partnership with Italian utility ACEA and is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete. This plan puts the Vatican at odds with the current U.S. administration, which has dismissed climate science and withdrawn from international climate agreements.
