Fed’s John Williams says inflation is easing as tariff effects move into the rearview mirror

John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and holder of a permanent voting seat on the FOMC, said inflation is slowly moving toward the Fed’s 2% target. Current inflation ranges between 2.75% and 3%, with Williams projecting a return to 2% by 2027-2028, describing tariff-related price increases as largely temporary. The next FOMC meeting is scheduled for September 15-16, with rates currently set between 3.5% and 3.75%. Williams emphasized that inflation expectations remain well-anchored, meaning economic actors still trust the Fed to control prices.
