Trade Talks Can Start When Memes Stop, Canadian PM Warns Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said trade talks with the United States will restart only when Washington stops posting memes and starts having serious discussions. Ottawa walked out of negotiations on August 21, refusing to let Canadian industries become subsidiaries of US firms or be wound down. In response, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 for the first time. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs take effect September 8, covering more than 700 US products and C$27.6 billion in trade. Canadian softwood lumber duties now total 45%.
