The S&P 500 usually falls in September. Why this year should be different.

U.S. stocks posted a solid August, with the S&P 500 recording its best August performance since 2020. Historically, September is the weakest month for U.S. equities. According to a note from Oppenheimer & Co., the worst September losses occur when the S&P 500 starts the month below its 200-day moving average, which is not the case right now. The U.S. market therefore has a technical opportunity to avoid a significant decline this month.
