G20 in Asheville: US Convenes World Finance Ministers to Discuss Growth and Sanctions on Iran

G20 finance ministers and central bank governors gathered on August 31 and September 1 in Asheville, North Carolina, convened by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. While the official agenda focused on growth and sovereign debt, the real topic was Washington’s pressure on partners to enforce secondary sanctions against Iran. Since June, the OFAC has sanctioned major Iranian crypto platforms and froze 131 million dollars in USDT linked to Iran’s central bank, bringing digital assets within the scope of US sanctions. The United States notably excluded South Africa from the meeting and invited Poland instead, raising questions about the group’s cohesion. For crypto investors, this development means that exchanges and stablecoin issuers are now potential targets of US foreign policy.
