Bitcoin Knots is preparing a new Bitcoin fork replacing SHA-256d proof-of-work with BLAKE2b, three weeks after BIP-110 stalled after producing only two blocks. A test run is scheduled for Sunday, potentially leading to a final release on September 1 if successful. The project aims to reduce reliance on existing Bitcoin miners by using BLAKE2b-compatible hardware such as Antminer A3 and Goldshell SC5 models originally built for Sia mining. Several key questions remain unresolved: current testnet4 mining capacity is estimated at only 50 to 70 TH/s, while roughly 870 TH/s would be needed to maintain 10-minute block intervals. No major exchange, wallet, or custodian has publicly committed to supporting the new chain.
