Elon Musk is planning to manufacture gas turbine blades in-house for SpaceX and Tesla to meet the massive power demands of his AI data centers. SpaceX has committed over $2.8 billion to gas turbines for xAI, including an approximately $805 million agreement and a potential $2 billion deal for mobile units, along with the acquisition of APR Energy for roughly $1 billion. The company is already operating more than 46 portable gas turbines delivering over 500 MW of capacity, and has purchased five 380 MW-class turbines from Doosan Enerbility. However, xAI’s operations face legal challenges from the NAACP and environmental groups over Clean Air Act violations related to unpermitted turbines running at Colossus sites.
