Tim Cook, dismissed as not a product guy, proved that supply-chain mastery could take Apple to new heights. Even before temporarily assuming the CEO role for an ailing Steve Jobs in 2009, Cook was no stranger to Apple’s earnings calls. The company’s first earnings call of 2009 was marked by a direct question from Wall Street: Would Apple run differently under Cook, and was he ready to take the helm permanently if Jobs could not return. The outgoing CEO demonstrated that operational expertise could be as valuable as product talent in leading the company.
