Meta launched Project OT in early 2026 to replace thousands of employees with AI and cut its workforce by up to 60%. In May, the company laid off roughly 8,000 employees, about 10% of its global workforce, while moving 7,000 workers into AI-focused roles. A second wave of cuts scheduled for November was canceled one day before launch due to major technical issues: internal AI tools generated a 220% increase in code changes but improved shipped products by only 36%, while technical incidents rose 40% and engineer firefighting time climbed 70%. More than 1,500 employees also signed a petition against using their keystroke and mouse-tracking data to train the AI systems set to replace them. Meta plans to invest over $130 billion in AI infrastructure in 2026.
