Donald Trump pledges to double auto tariff on Canadian vehicles to 50%

President Donald Trump announced that tariffs on Canadian automobiles, trucks, automotive parts, and steel would double to 50%, effective January 1, 2027. This announcement, made via Truth Social on August 24, follows the collapse of negotiations aimed at reducing tariffs to 15%. A previous wave of 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect the day before, on August 23. Current tariffs on Canadian vehicles stand at 25% and apply to non-US content in vehicles crossing the border. Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned of potential countermeasures.
