Developers published open-source tools to strip Claude’s invisible watermarks within hours of Anthropic confirming their global rollout. Guillaume Meyer released an open-source workaround approximately four hours after Anthropic’s announcement, attracting over 100 contributors and 20,000 bookmarks on X. Anthropic introduced the watermarking system to comply with the EU AI Act, which requires AI providers to make synthetic content machine-detectable under threat of fines up to 3% of annual turnover. Claude’s watermarking technology relies on Google’s SynthID, while the workarounds use language models to rewrite passages and replace words with synonyms.
