Google’s cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin did not market test the name Alphabet before its launch in 2015. Steve Jobs, shortly before his death in 2011, advised Page to focus on just five products and eliminate the rest, warning against excessive diversification. Page acknowledged that Jobs was right, but still created Alphabet as a container for Google’s future ventures, including autonomous driving with Waymo and AI research with DeepMind. The company is now valued at approximately $1.9 trillion, making it the largest market capitalization in the tech sector. Sergey Brin chose the Alphabet name, while Page chose the Google name.
