Amazon plans to expand its drone delivery service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by year-end, a sixfold increase from its current footprint. Prime Air, originally announced by Jeff Bezos in 2013, has completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries this year with a target of 1 million. Following regulatory approval in 2024 for long-range deliveries, the company has grown beyond its initial Dallas and Phoenix markets to 11 metropolitan areas. Its drones can carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds within a 7.5-mile radius, with most deliveries completing in about 60 minutes. Amazon competes against Alphabet’s Wing and Zipline, which have achieved 1 million and 2 million commercial deliveries respectively.
