Meta Faces $1.4 Trillion Threat, Stock Drops as Landmark Youth-Safety Trial Begins

The trial against Meta filed by four US states (California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey) over child safety began Tuesday in an Oakland federal court. Meta shares fell 4.45% to $543.67, extending a 16.06% monthly decline and a 29.86% yearly loss. Meta itself calculated the theoretical penalty at $1.4 trillion, a figure the states consider inflated, pointing to roughly $200 billion as more likely. The six-week trial seeks to force the removal of addictive features like infinite scroll and autoplay, deletion of data collected from users under 13, and elimination of AI models trained on that data.
