Chinese shipping company Sea Legend Shipping is launching a weekly container service through the Arctic’s Northern Sea Route, with the first departure scheduled around August 12, 2026. The route will connect Chinese ports to Europe in 20 to 22 days, roughly half the transit time via the Suez Canal. Seven ships with capacities ranging from 1,740 to 4,890 TEU will operate the service, which is only viable during the narrow summer window of three to four months. Russia’s cooperation is essential, as the Northern Sea Route runs almost entirely along Russia’s Arctic coastline, and the initiative fits into China’s Polar Silk Road concept. Proponents highlight potential CO2 emissions reductions of nearly 50 percent, but significant hurdles remain, including higher insurance premiums, limited icebreaker availability, and sparse search and rescue infrastructure.
