NuScale Power has secured what could become the largest small modular reactor program ever attempted in the United States through a partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority. The deal with ENTRA1 Energy, structured as a 50/50 joint venture, aims to deploy six nuclear plants with a potential capacity of 6 to 8 gigawatts across the southeastern United States. NuScale will provide reactor design while ENTRA1 handles financing and ownership, with TVA receiving carbon-free baseload power without building the plants itself. For reference, 6 gigawatts could supply electricity to over 4 million homes, nearly matching TVA’s current entire nuclear fleet capacity of approximately 8.3 gigawatts. NuScale is currently the only SMR designer with full Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval for its 77 MWe module, though no commercial reactor is yet operational.
