Beijing seeks to remove Nvidia, but Chinese AI developers lack alternatives

China’s Cyberspace Administration banned major tech firms like ByteDance and Alibaba from purchasing Nvidia AI chips in September 2025, pushing them toward domestic alternatives. Huawei’s Ascend chip series represents the most prominent domestic contender but significantly trails Nvidia in raw performance and software maturity. Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, built over nearly two decades, represents a difficult-to-replicate competitive moat. Nvidia has generated zero revenue from H200 chip sales to China as of mid-2026, despite US approval. Chinese companies like DeepSeek, Baidu, and Alibaba are adapting their operations to available domestic hardware as Beijing accelerates its push for technological self-reliance.
