OpenAI announced Computer History on August 13, a new feature for ChatGPT on macOS that records user activity including clicks, keystrokes, and keyboard shortcuts through macOS accessibility APIs to build a searchable timeline. ChatGPT and Codex can tap into this timeline to provide context-aware assistance, picking up where users left off or suggesting automations based on workflow patterns. Computer History replaces Chronicle, an earlier preview that relied on periodic screenshots, with a less intrusive approach using structured interaction data instead of screen captures. The feature is opt-in and off by default, with granular controls allowing users to pause collection, exclude specific apps and websites, and delete individual entries. The initial rollout is limited to Pro, Business, and Enterprise tier users on macOS, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom due to GDPR compliance issues.
