Peter Thiel acquired nearly 1% of Vista Energy, an Argentine oil producer, for approximately $76 million (about 1.2 million American depositary shares). According to a quarterly filing with the SEC, Vista Energy now represents 18.1% of Thiel Macro’s portfolio, worth $75.9 million, making it the second-largest disclosed holding, just behind Amazon. This stake is part of a broader energy bet, with three power companies (Vistra, American Electric Power, and DTE Energy) together accounting for roughly 34% of the portfolio. Vista Energy operates in the Vaca Muerta shale formation, a field roughly the size of Belgium holding the world’s second-largest shale gas reserves, producing 156,061 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the second quarter, up 16% from the first. Thiel met Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires four months ago, aligning with his strategy of positioning in lower-tax jurisdictions.
