Alphabet announced on August 5 a sweeping leadership restructure at Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO to become Chair and Chief Scientist at Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously Chief Technology Officer, takes charge of Gemini’s development teams and research. Jeff Dean, 27 years at Google, and three other senior leaders are leaving to found Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation backed by Alphabet as a founding investor. Alphabet shares dropped roughly 3.5% to 4% following the announcement. Gemini now reaches more than 950 million monthly users.
