Crypto Regulation: SEC Takes Action Without Waiting for Congress

The SEC announced a meeting on Friday, August 14, to review new rules governing cryptocurrencies, aiming to create a tailored offering pathway for token issuers. Friday’s vote will only concern the publication of an official proposal, which will then go through a public consultation process that typically takes 12 to 18 months. This initiative comes as the CLARITY Act, a major bill for the division of powers between the SEC and the CFTC, stalls in the Senate with a procedural vote scheduled for September 15. Negotiators still need to reach a compromise on stablecoin yields and ethical rules regarding politicians holding cryptocurrencies. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins had already warned that his agency would legislate alone if the CLARITY Act were to fail.
