A team of researchers from three of China’s most elite universities – the University of Science and Technology of China, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University – has developed a simulation framework called Light Society capable of modeling over one billion AI agents. This project represents a roughly 100x leap over previous simulations, which typically hit a ceiling of around 10 million agents. Light Society relies on two major technical innovations: a mixture-of-models engine and knowledge-distilled surrogate models. The researchers conducted two flagship experiments at this scale, including Trust Games and opinion diffusion modeling, with the original source material noting that the tool can be used to test methods of influencing public opinion.
