Barrick and Newmont reach truce to facilitate IPO plans for $42B North American spinoff

The world’s two largest gold miners, Barrick and Newmont, have reached an agreement to resolve their dispute over Nevada Gold Mines, the world’s largest gold-producing complex. Newmont issued a formal notice of default to Barrick in February 2026, alleging mismanagement of the joint venture along with declining output and rising costs over six years. Without Newmont’s cooperation, holding minority consent rights, the IPO timeline could not be met. Barrick plans to spin off its North American assets into a new entity called North American Barrick, valued at approximately $42 billion, with a target to sell 10 to 15 percent by the end of 2026.
