OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Maps for EU users

OpenAI has begun rolling out its ChatGPT Maps feature to European Union users, bringing an interactive and integrated places experience to the AI assistant. This enhanced version, accessible via a navigation element or the /maps command, represents a significant evolution from the basic local search functionality introduced in December 2024. The European deployment marks a cautious expansion into a market subject to strict regulation, including GDPR, the EU AI Act, and the Digital Services Act. OpenAI had already announced data residency options in February 2025 for EU enterprise customers, demonstrating its long-term commitment to this market. This initiative aims to keep users within the ChatGPT ecosystem rather than directing them to Google Maps, the service that currently dominates the mapping sector.
