Bitcoin split into two distinct chains overnight on August 8-9, after the mandatory-signaling window for BIP-110 began, a proposed temporary soft fork restricting certain uses of arbitrary data in Bitcoin transactions. The first 59 blocks produced on the dominant chain showed zero bit-4 signals, marking a silent miner boycott. The BIP-110-enforcing branch produced only two blocks (heights 961,632 and 961,633), mined via OCEAN, before stalling, leaving this chain 57 blocks behind the dominant chain, which had reached height 961,690 by 6:34 a.m. UTC. Coinbase and Kraken reported their Bitcoin systems operating normally.
