Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement on August 7, 2026, establishing that an attack on any one signatory will be treated as an attack on all three. This collective defense mechanism mirrors verbatim the principle of NATO’s Article 5. The three countries bring complementary assets: Turkey operates the second-largest NATO military, Pakistan is a nuclear-armed state, and Saudi Arabia contributes substantial financial resources and a strategic geographic position at the heart of the Gulf.
